What is a Fish Spa?

A Fish Spa is a 20 minute session in which you immerse your feet in our warm water fish tanks, where our delightful Barefoot Fish await. For the next 20 minutes, these tiny aquatic therapists will pamper you by gently exfoliating away dead skin, leaving your feet feeling as light as air.

Do the fish help certain skin ailments?

Yes they have assisted with the successful treatment of eczema and psoriasis and many other skin diseases and ailments for hundreds of years.

What are the benefits of a Fish Spa session?

Softer, smoother, healthier, refreshed feet and a smile on your face!

Can anyone have a Fish Spa? Are there any restrictions?
  • Clients with open wounds, large cuts or abrasions may not be able to participate at the time of their booking. However, they are invited back when their conditions have healed.
  • Contagious skin conditions at the time of your booking will not be able to proceed until the condition has cleared.
  • Those undergoing current or recent chemotherapy or radiotherapy should be past their 'hot days' period.
  • If you have a spray tan, avoid booking your treatment until it is able to got wet.
Is it ok to wear nail polish?

Yes, nail polish is fine. Infact, we prefer you leave it on as residual from the removing chemicals can linger and affect the fish.

How long does a Fish Spa session take?

Please allow approximately 30 minutes for your appointment,

This allows for washing and sterilizing of your feet and lower legs, 20 minutes time in the tanks, and post session sterilization.

What does a fish pedicure feel like?

Like very fine vibrations all over your feet, similar to a micro-massage. Clients find that after the first minute or so it’s very relaxing. Afterwards, as well as your feet feeling softer they will feel lighter and refreshed.

Is a Fish Spa session safe and hygienic?

Absolutely! At Barefoot Fish, we strictly adhere to hygiene practices as part of the code of conduct in Australia. This ensures that Fish Spa maintains a high level of hygiene.

Everyones feet are cleaned and sterilised before putting them in our tanks. The water is continuously cycled through a powerful filtration system including ultraviolet and ozone sterilisation and clients are required to cover any open wounds or sores during use of the fish spa. A series of questions will be asked of every person before their spa to ensure our other guests and our fish are kept healthy.

Should any health concerns arise during the questionnaire clients may be requested to return at a later date when their conditions have cleared.

The fish cannot transmit diseases, the water that the treatments are provided in is constantly filtered and sterilised and there is no record of any diseases or infection being transmitted through this treatment.

Is the water cold during a Fish Spa?

No, we try and replicate the fish’s natural habitat as best as possible and for this the water has to be nice and warm.

How often should I have a fish spa? Should it be part of a regular regime?

Yes, we believe that you should book a spa weekly for 4 – 6 weeks initially and then a repeat every 6 to 8 weeks to keep your feet in tip top condition.

Can I combine Fish Spa sessions with other services?

Yes, you sure can! You can combine your Fish Spa with our Ionic Spa in the same appointment for a discounted price! 

What fish are used in the Fish Spa?

Our fish are Barefoot Fish, they are a toothless fish that is specially bred for our use.

Does the Fish Spa tickle?

For some people the first few minutes can be a little ticklish but you will soon get used to it.

Do the fish bite and does it hurt?

Not at all, the fish have no teeth so the experience is completely pain free.

What happens to the fish when they retire?

The fish are re-homed. Some move onto hydroponic farms, others go back to the breeder. No fish are released into the wild, rivers or dams.

Do you recycle the fish spa water?

Yes. We recycle our fish nutrient rich water into gardens as often as we can!

An Ionic Spa is a 30 minute session in which you place your feet into a spa with an Array. The array discharges negative and positive ions which helps support your natural immunity and lymphatic system. During your spa you will see the water change colour, indicating what part of the body it is supporting.

Can anyone have an Ionic Spa? Are there any restrictions?

Unfortunately, Ionic Spa Treatments are not suitable for everyone. If you have any of the following conditions, we recommend that you DO NOT use the ionic spa:

  • Children under 10 years old
  • People with open wounds on their feet.
  • Pregnant women (women breast feeding should not do a cleanse more than once a week)
  • People diagnosed with serious illness (not on a regular basis)
  • People suffering from fever
  • People who have a pulse adjuster, pace maker, metal or other electromagnetism devices on your person
  • People who have undergone organ transplantation
  • Anyone on heart regulating medications (check with staff if you are unsure)
  • People who periodically undertake medication that a reduction or absence of would leave them mentally or physically incapacitated (check with staff if you are unsure)
  • People who have non-medicated hypertension
  • Blood cancer patient
  • Anyone who suffers from epilepsy

Is there any preparation required before an Ionic Spa?

It is recommended that you take any medications at least 5 hours prior to an Ionic Spa treatment, or they can be taken afterwards.

Your Ionic Spa Treatment typically lasts for 30 minutes. However, we recommend allowing extra time after your session for cleaning your feet. This ensures that you can fully enjoy the relaxing experience without feeling rushed.

An Ionic Spa is typically described as pleasant and soothing. Most people do not notice any significant sensations at all, however individual experiences can vary.
